Jamaica has a deep-rooted tradition of embracing the underdog—the anti-hero who defies the odds. Upsetters are the rule-breakers, the gamechangers, the ones who challenge convention. In the 1960s, Jamaica’s “rude boys” watched old spaghetti westerns, seeing themselves in gunslingers like Django, figures who stood tall against the establishment. It was this same rebellious spirit that gave birth to reggae music, a sound that shook the
world. Master Blender, Nicholas Melillo, travelled to Jamaica for Bob Marley’s 70th birthday in February 2015 (the very same trip which led to a friendship with the Marleys and of course, the legendary Georgie). After celebrations, he went searching the island for cigar tobacco and the old-style Jamaican blending techniques. In the mountains outside Montego Bay, Kingston, and the town of May Pen he found both. Melillo met one of the oldest cigar tobacco growers on the island, growing Cow Tongue, a tobacco cultivated and blended in those hills since indigenous Arawak planted it thousands of years ago.
