1867

This year 2025, we are honoured to be established as one of the trusted Havana Cigar Specialists in the UK. All our Cuban cigars are EMS stamped, authentic and only distributed by Hunter and Frankau, the only Cuban Supplier in the United Kingdom. Our story begins with Joseph Barber, the great grandfather of James Barber, who founded our business in Otley, West Yorkshire. Originating from England, Joseph ventured to the USA as a carpet bagger, acquiring parcels of land in Virginia and Kentucky. There, he cultivated tobacco plantations, establishing a thriving enterprise importing tobacco to the UK. His planation was named “Hickory Thicket.” Joseph made over 30 transatlantic voyages by slow boat to ensure the success of his enterprise. Joseph opened our first retail shop in Otley, manufacturing twist tobacco on-site and wholesaling to retailers across Northern England and Scotland.

1889

Joseph Barber planned and arranged the largest consignment of tobacco into the UK of its time. 80 Tonnes of tobacco was sourced from Chesapeake Bay and transported to Otley via Liverpool, this marked a significant achievement in our growing business.

1898

Joseph, built a stemming factory in Providence, Kentucky, alongside notable industry figures like Tom Gallagher.

1939

Tragedy hit the business as the factory in Otley suffered a catastrophic fire, which almost closed the business. The burnt out shell was sold to FW Woolworths. Undeterred, Jack and Fred stepped up and reopened the business at new premises within a matter of weeks.

1940

Following the fire, Jack Barber was called to serve in World War 2 as an ambulance driver. He spent 7 years in Egypt. During this period, his brother Fred and wife Alice Barber managed the shop.

1964

In 1964, Jack moved the shop across the road in Otley to 33 Kirkgate. His youngest Son, James helped out in the shop from being 11 years old. His responsibilities included opening the shop, sweeping the floor and polishing the brass door handle every week. (Something he then insisted his daughters also did 40 years later!)

1980

Aged just 21, James took over the family business. His Father, Jack, continued to work in the business and support James until he passed away in 1984.

1994

James, at the age of 36, became the youngest chairman of the AITS (Association of independent tobacco specialists).

1996

James was an early innovator, and with the landscape of retail evolving, he embarked on an online venture pioneering internet sales to customers worldwide. In a bold move, he registered the domain www.smoke.co.uk and established an online venture. Customers could conveniently browse an online catalogue and place orders by completing an order form. This forward-thinking adaptation ensured our continued relevance in an ever-evolving market.

2008

The retail premises made a move to Westgate, Otley, where a significantly larger space provided opportunities for diversification into homeware and gifts. Amidst challenges such as the smoking ban, the potential risk of online tobacco sales being prohibited, and the persistent rise in taxes, this expansion allowed us to adapt and thrive in a dynamic industry landscape.

2010

We were honoured to be named in Country Living Magazines, Top 10 most charming shops in Britain.

2019

Representing a significant leap forward from our enduring legacy in Otley, James made the strategic decision to relocate the business to Harrogate, North Yorkshire. This pivotal move has empowered us to sustain our growth and focus on our expertise in cigars and tobacco, ensuring continued success in our new location.

2024

Carrying forth the family heritage, Alicia, James’s youngest daughter, became a part of the business in January 2024. As the fifth generation, Alicia brings a fervent dedication to upholding traditions while embracing innovation. Reflecting on her father’s resilience and entrepreneurial drive in overcoming obstacles like legislative changes and rising costs has been deeply inspiring. Recognizing the ongoing challenges ahead for both the retail and tobacco industries, Alicia is enthusiastic about infusing fresh perspectives to ensure our enduring presence for years to come.

James now runs the company with his wife Rosalie and their small team of staff.
