In 2014, Nick Melillo faced a pivotal decision: continue as Executive Vice President of International Operations and Head Blender at Drew Estate—a position he had held since 2003—or follow his passion and create the cigars of his dreams using his 20 years of experience and access to the finest tobaccos. The choice was clear, and in 2015, Foundation Cigar Company was born—all for the love of the leaf.

Nick’s journey began in high school in New Haven, Connecticut, where he would visit his grandfather and brother at their local cigar shop every Saturday. Memorizing every detail of the humidor, he eventually persuaded the shop to give him a weekend job.

After gaining early experience at Calabash Shoppe, Nick traveled the world, refining his knowledge and expertise. In 2003, Jonathan Drew recruited him to move to Nicaragua to oversee operations at Drew Estate. There, Nick revolutionized cigar blending and fermentation, producing cigars that reshaped the industry in the early 21st century.

In 2015, Nick branched out to establish Foundation Cigar Company, creating a brand that champions quality, innovation, and a deep respect for the leaf. Foundation cigars have since earned accolades and recognition, including #1 Best Buy (Cigar Aficionado), Cigar of the Year (Cigar Snob), and #3 in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25, 2019.
